Obituary for Kenneth A. "Mac" MacRae

Kenneth A. "Mac" MacRae
Kenneth (Mac) A. MacRae, 92, of Coldwater passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Masonville Place in Coldwater.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Rev. Rene Whitaker of First Presbyterian Church officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service beginning at 10:00 AM at the funeral home.
Kenneth was born September 4, 1922 to Frederick and Rebecca (Ritter) MacRae in Detroit, MI. Both of his parents died when Mac was young so he moved to Coldwater with his stepmother, Lillian Funk MacRae. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1941.
He served as a cook in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII on a LST in the South Pacific. He met Melva Jean (Dixie) Cooper (also in the Coast Guard) and they married October 13, 1945 in San Diego, CA. After marrying they moved back to Coldwater where Mac began working for the US Postal Service, first with a walking city route and later as a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 1986.
Mac and Dixie liked to travel and developed many friendships- especially in Finland, Germany and Brazil, countries they were fortunate to visit.
Mac was an avid bicyclist, riding 1000’s of miles over the years- finally ending his biking career after a fall only about 2 years ago.
Mac was an avid writer of letters to the editor of the Daily Reporter, curmudgeonly letters mostly regarding political issues. He loved jokes, Applebees (the waitresses) and Mancino’s. He was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church. For the past 7 years he has been a resident of Masonville where he lived with his little dog, Midget and the loving staff at Masonville.
Mac and Dixie had 2 children, Rebecca (Jim) Troust and Curtis (Cecile) MacRae both of Coldwater. He also has 2 grandchildren; Nathan MacRae of Westland and Kristen (Mike) Miller and 3 great grandchildren of Ada, MI. Also, Barney Alvares their “adopted” son in Brazil. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie in 2011, 2 brothers, 3 sisters and 1 stepsister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Presbyterian Health Clinic (free clinic). www.dutcherfh.com
