Vera Marie Lindsey Hurd, age 91, stepped forward into the presence of her Savior on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Citrus Valley Hospice in West Covina, California. Born May 29, 1926 in Attica, Indiana to Bertha and Reverend John Lindsey, Vera earned her master’s degree in Music Education and became a college professor at Spring Arbor College, led collegiate choirs, and became the wife and pastoral ministry partner of Byron Johnson Hurd in 1954.
Vera is survived by her children Byron (Mary) Hurd, Yvonne (Jeff) Wolf, and Dale (Karen) Hurd, along with 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Vera was preceded in death by her brother Marion and her parents.
Vera moved her children to Bronson, Michigan in 1968 to assume a teaching position in Bronson Community Schools, where she taught Girls Phys Ed and English, and introduced girl’s athletic programs to the school. She retired from teaching in 1986 but remained active in the community, serving on the Bronson school board for several years and on the boards of Pleasant Hill Church and Branch County Library along with many local committees. Vera loved camping with friends and family and caught her last Northern Pike at age 88 on Duncan Bay.
Visitation will be held at Pleasant Hill Church, 10:00 am Saturday, February 10, 2018. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am, with a luncheon to follow at the church. Anyone wishing to celebrate Vera’s life can do so with a gift to the Salvation Army. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dutcher Funeral Home in Bronson.
