Obituary for Sherman "Sherm" E. Stanley

Lifetime Coldwater resident Sherman E. Stanley, 78, passed away Monday, December 14, 2020 at Ascension Borgess in Kalamazoo.
Sherman was born April 30, 1942 in Brownsville, TX to Robert & Vivian (Sherman) Stanley. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1960 and was diligent in keeping in touch with several of his classmates. Sherm attended Michigan State University, as well as Hillsdale College.
An exceptionally kind and thoughtful man throughout his life, Sherm will be fondly remembered for his passion for reading, history, sports and possessing a broad repertoire of knowledge on a myriad of topics. Many, especially his daughter Kerry, suggested he would have been an extremely successful Jeopardy contestant.
Without question his true loves were first and foremost his wife Cathy Riddle, whom he married on April 14, 1973, and his children, daughter Kerry (Patrick) Long of Coldwater, son, Robert (Erika) Stanley of Grand Blanc. He enthusiastically embraced his grandchildren Emma Stanley, Ian & Isaac Long, Zoey Stanley. He also cherished his two sisters Roberta Stanley of East Lansing and Shelby (Charlie Hoopes) Stanley of Quincy.
Other than his family, his loyalty through thick and thin was to the Michigan State University Spartans, especially on the football field. Perhaps his most prized possession were the Green and White football season tickets in section 126 of the upper deck he inherited from his parents Robert & Vivian (Sherman) Stanley, who secured them in 1955 when the upper deck first opened. The seats were situated next to the Coaches’ Box, which Sherm particularly enjoyed.
Sherm also followed his father’s lead in enjoying charcoal grilling in several seasons. He played golf with an unusual intensity and competitive spirit and focus. Sherm was a member of the Coldwater Elks and the Country Club. He was very active at the Senior Center and enjoyed playing on a pool league.
Sherm spent most of his working career with the Crotty Corporation of Quincy where he worked in sales and quality control.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Stanley Grandchildren Educational Fund. www.dutcherfh.com.
