Obituary for Joan M. Christy

Joan Marie Doubleday Christy, 88 of Union City passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021 at her residence with loving family by her side.

Joan was born October 23, 1932 to Ivan and Margaret (Aldrich) Doubleday in Bedford Township. Her father’s career as a heavy equipment operator resulted in a rather nomadic lifestyle that spanned four states and 27 school systems. In those travels, she met John L. Christy, who she married in Angola on April 5th of 1952 and had five children. The marriage ended in divorce after 17 years.

Joan completed nurse’s training and earned her LPN license in 1972. She worked the Surgical Floor and Dialysis Unit at the Community Health Center of Branch County and then transferred to their Maintenance Department. Eventually, she started her own business as a painting contractor which created employment at various times for her children. Her wallpaper jobs were “seamless”!

Joan was happiest in front of a sewing machine and was proud to say that all five of her children could sew a straight seam and sew on a button. She was an extremely talented woman who was always willing to create a prom dress, a quilt or make alterations to a garment for family and friends. A gifted and creative artist, she used all mediums from paper mache’ to oil paints.
Mrs. Christy is survived by her children, Randy Christy of Union City, Ivanne (Dean) Spooner of Union City, James “Bill” (Brenda) Christy of Layton, UT, Bridget (Monte) Putnam of Union City, and Katrish “Trish” (Shaun) McCavit of Quincy; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
