Obituary for James (Jim) Brown

James (Jim) Alfred Brown, born February 27, 1937, in Alma, Michigan, died on August 2nd, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was the 8th child of Charles and Adelaide (Rolixman) Brown.

Jim was a veteran of the US Marine Corp and a graduate of Northwoods Institute in Alma, Michigan. He married Ruth Kinkema in Spring Lake, MI on June 16th,1962. The Brown family moved to Coldwater, MI in 1976 when Jim was hired as a purchasing agent at Theodore Bargman Company. He was active in the Coldwater community, serving on the Planning Commission for many years. He was a member of the Exchange Club for over forty years and a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Jim was a talented craftsman and found great joy in working with his hands. He repaired and restored furniture at his home workshop for over twenty years. He also rehabilitated several homes in Coldwater. An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed spending time in the woods and on the water.

Jim is survived by siblings Wanda Shifferd and Charlotte (Gerald) Jenkins and his three children and their families; Martha (Mamar) Mezidi and son Ezra, Paul (Tossy) Brown and sons Silas, Henry, and Calvin, Colleen (Tom) Burnet and daughters Claire and Lydia. He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Ruth (Kinkema) Brown, formerly of Spring Lake, MI, his daughter Elizabeth (Liz) Brown, and siblings; sisters Rosaline Mercado and Glennie Haase, and brothers Stuart, Ralph, William, and Jerry Brown.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 13th at the First Presbyterian Church in Coldwater, MI. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Coldwater in memory of Jim Brown.
