Obituary for Harold E. Smullen

Harold E. Smullen, 89 of Quincy passed away Saturday, November 09, 2019 at the Laurels of Coldwater.

In following Harold’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will take place at 4:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Lakeview Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the Coldwater
American Legion Post #52. Following the graveside service, the family will have a celebration of Harold’s life at the Quincy American Legion from 4:30 – 6:00 pm. The family was cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home.

Harold was born August 8, 1930 to James and Eolyn (Boon) Smullen in Coldwater. He left high school in 9th grade to serve his county during Korea in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the Navy, Harold began a long working career as a lineman. He worked all over the country and spent his last 42 years working for the Government as a linesman. He enjoyed his years living in North Pole AK. Harold retired from Ft.Wainwright, AK in 2001 and then moved back to Coldwater. He married Rose McKim on June 14, 1980 in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Harold was a long-time member of the Quincy American Legion and a life member of the Eagles. He enjoyed being outdoors, spending time doing yardwork, plowing and doing brush work for the neighborhood. Harold enjoyed listening to old country music and having a bowl of vanilla ice cream with hot fudge on most days. He will be remembered for his generous and kind spirit.

Mr. Smullen is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rose; his children Donna Smullen of CA, Harold Smullen, Jr. of CT, David (Kimberly) Thrasher of Sugarland, TX; and Kimberlee (Nicholas) Woellert of Quincy; his sisters Jeanette Kubasiak, Joann Herman, and Sallie (Don) Pope all of Coldwater; his grandchildren Melissa and Jason Pellegrino; Breanna McCalla, Ashely (Troy) Hanath, Taylor and Erin Duncklee, Dillen and Lisa Woellert, and Jeffary Smullen,; his great grandchildren Shelby, Colby, and Lacey Hanath and Dominic, Shealynn, and Kaysie Pellegrino. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Jeff Smullen,; his brothers James “Sonny” Smullen, Jr. and Joseph Smullen; his sisters Eleanor Kaiser and Joyce Ernsburger.
