Obituary for Eugene J. "Gene" Hurrell

Eugene Jay “Gene” Hurrell, 94, of Coldwater, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Grand Vista.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00 PM on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastors Michael Cary and Robert Eickmann officiating. Visitation will be held, prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery with Military Honors presented by the Coldwater American Legion Post #52. For those who cannot attend, the service will be webcast on Gene’s obituary page on the funeral home website.

Eugene was born September 30, 1926 to James and Olive (Luckhurst) Hurrell in Owosso, MI. As Gene was finishing his senior year at Muskegon High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 16, 1945 and served stateside during WWII. On November 19, 1949 he married Joyce Christiansen. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2007. On August 14, 2008 he met Katharine Cary and they have been creating memories ever since. Gene moved to Coldwater in the early 1960s and built his home on Western Ave in 1971. He started his working career at Gambles before taking a position with Keebler Cookie as a traveling salesman. He was in real estate for a short time before working at SMB&T for 24 years, retiring on January 1, 1991 as a Vice President.

Gene was a man of faith and attended the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Quincy until it’s closing in July of 2018. He was a life member and past president of the Coldwater Noon Exchange Club. Gene enjoyed spending time playing golf, fishing, and traveling. He wintered in Ft. Myers, FL for 20 years. Gene will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Mr. Hurrell is survived by his companion of almost 13 years, Katharine “Kathy” Cary of Coldwater; his nieces Janice (David) Erts of Sturgis and Carol Schimke of Manistee; his great niece Nancy (Gary) Misner; his great nephews Matthew (Tina) Erts and Stephen (Rheta) Erts; his great, great nieces & nephews Rachel and Elise Misner, Evan, Kristin, and Ansel Erts; Kathy’s children Michael (Tami) Cary and Diane Cary; grandchildren Kimberly (Trevor) Kimball, Mikayla (Alex) Dowley, and Rachel (Austin) Burkhart; great granddaughter Braelyn Kimball; Kathy’s brother Ronald Love and his children Brooke (Sam) Adame and Stephanie Love; and great nieces Ava, Brenna, and Emma Adame. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Joyce Hurrell; his half-sister Betty (John) Hurrell.
