Obituary for Desmond L. Smolen
Desmond Lee Smolen, 39 of Coldwater passed away Friday, March 12, 2021 at Promedica Coldwater Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
In following his wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will have a celebration of his life at a later date. The family was cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home.
Desmond was born November 6, 1981 to Elwood and Gail (Shoemaker) Sanderson, Jr. in Lexington, VA. On May 23, 2014 he married Julie Thompson in Coldwater. Desmond was a hardworking man, spending many years doing foundry work in many different capacities. He enjoyed spending time hunting, shooting guns, playing video games, and watching Anime. His true joy in life was being around his family. Desmond will be remembered for his big heart, strong & protective personality, and being a good teacher to his children. He lived his life in a selfless and honest way and was an inspiration to those who knew him. Desmond will be missed by many.
Desmond is survived by his wife Julie Smolen of Coldwater; his mother Gail Richardson of Lagrange, IN; his children Kyana (Dalton Russell), Nakysha (Annistin Lieby) Smolen, Isabel (Keighan Denney) Mendez, Kalee Smolen, and Karter Smolen all of Coldwater; many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Elwood Sanderson, Jr. and his step-father Mark Penland.
