Billy E. Doherty, 93, of Coldwater, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Grand Vista Assisted Living.
A graveside service for burial of ashes will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie, IN. A lakeside celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Billy was born February 12, 1924 in Fairmount Twp., IN to Wilson and Gladys (Smith) Doherty. His father died when he was very young and was raised by his step-father Edsil Daily. Billy served in the US Army and was a veteran of WWII where he had proudly earned many awards and medals including the Purple Heart. He married Annajene Dowling on August 21, 1949 in Muncie, IN.
Mr. Doherty worked in law enforcement from 22 years, retiring from Delaware County Sheriff Department as Chief Deputy.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #433, Moose Lodge #33, DAV and the Indiana Sheriff Association. Billy relocated to the Coldwater, MI area after his retirement where he enjoyed lake life and the many water activities that go with it. He enjoyed working on construction projects and keeping busy as a handyman. Billy most of all enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
Billy is survived by his wife Jene, his son Dave (Cindy) Doherty of Muncie, IN, his grandchildren Jason (Lindsay) Doherty of Fishers, IN, Carrie (Tony) Huffman of Redkey, IN, his great grandchildren Ellia, Riley and Jacob Doherty and Ethan Huffman. He was preceded in death by his sister Colene Doherty and is now reunited with his son Danny Doherty. Memorials may be directed to a charity of one's choice. www.dutcherfh.com
