Obituary for Donald D. Carpenter

Donald D. Carpenter
Donald Dean Carpenter, 82 of Bronson, died Friday, March 24, 2017 at his home while surrounded by family.

A funeral service will take place at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Bronson with Pastor Terry Siler of the First Congregational Church of Bronson officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM. In following Don’s wishes, cremation will take place after the service.

Don was a tool and die maker, business owner, and tractor enthusiast, but most importantly, he was a supportive and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Tender-hearted and loyal, it was in his family he found his greatest joy.

He was born September 26, 1934 to Glenn and Blessing (Nichols) Carpenter in Camden Township, MI. A small-town, country boy with mechanical and mathematical skill, he worked nights in a shoe factory to put himself through Allied School of Trade in Chicago. Don worked about 20 years at Bronson Specialties Inc. and in 1977, co-founded D&L Tooling, opened on a gamble in a rented brick barn and twice expanded. On July 26, 1960 in Grafton, ND, he married Beverly Benge, forever at his side. Don retired in 1999 and spent much time with his beloved grandchildren. He rarely missed their events and frequently traveled with friends and family.

Don belonged to the First United Methodist Church in Bronson, where he was a leader of the youth group. He was a past Master and life member of F. & A.M. Mystic Lodge No. 141 and coached his sons in little league baseball, an experience he cherished. A man of varied interests and talents, he was a faithful Detroit Tigers fan who liked cars, trucks of all types and John Deere tractors. He spent hours impeccably restoring toy tractors. There was nothing he could not build, mend or assemble, gifts he shared with his sons and anyone fortunate enough to receive his creations.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beverly Carpenter of Bronson; his sons Donald S. (Carrie) and Douglas A. (Jenny) Carpenter all of Battle Creek; his grandchildren Meredith, Grant, Boston, Bronson, and Beckett; several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law Doris Marie (Billie) Marquart.

Memorials may be directed to BYRA (Bronson Little League Association). www.dutcherfh.com
