Obituary for Virginia E. Smith

Virginia E.  Smith
Virginia Elaine Smith, 97 of Bronson passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Sturgis Hospital.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 20, 2017 at First Congregational Church of Bronson with Pastor Terry Siler officiating. Interment will follow at Bronson Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Bronson from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.

Virginia was born May 10, 1919 to Fred and Edith (Hollett) Solomon in Culver, IN. She graduated from Niles High School. Virginia was a telephone supervisor in Niles prior to marrying the love of her life Francis Smith on October 11, 1940. With their marriage, she moved to Bronson. Virginia was employed by Bronson Reel from 1960 to 1983, where she worked in payroll and billing. She retired in 1983 upon the closing of the company.

Virginia was a woman of faith and an active member of First Congregational Church where she was part of the Women’s Fellowship and a Sunday School Teacher. She supported many causes in the Bronson community. Virginia enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, and was well known for her pie making. She and Francis both enjoyed gardening and also canning all their hard work. Her true joy in life was spending time with her family, especially her children & grandchildren. Virginia was an avid Michigan State Spartans fan. She will be remembered as a caring, thoughtful, gracious, and giving lady.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her children Susan (John) Davidson of Burr Oak, MI, and Rev. Thomas (Katharine) Smith of Austin, TX; her grandchildren Lisa (Dan) Jerome, Heather (Ryan) Maurer, Nathan (Kelly) Smith, and Holly (James) Bohart; her great grandchildren Meredith, Elyse, and Grace Jerome, Joshua and Justin Maurer, Lily and Grace Bohart; her niece Jane (David) Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Francis; and her sister Erma Friesner.
