Obituary for Robert D. Stevens


Robert D. Stevens, 89, of Bronson, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 9, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors presented by the Bronson American Legion. Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 3-8:00 PM, with the rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM, at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson.
Robert was born January 29, 1926 in Detroit, MI to August & Theresa (Szpotek) Stevens. He served in the US Army from March 31, 1944 to June 7, 1946, holding the rank of Tech Sgt. He served in combat with the 353rd Regiment, 89th Infantry Division. Bob was awarded the European Theater and Rhineland Central Ribbons with two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, Army of Occupation Medal and Victory Medal.
Robert married Hattie R. Smoker on June 12, 1948 in Bronson. He was the Controller for LA Darling for 20 years, VP and General Manager for Bronson Plastics for 20 years and retired in 1990 as President of Borse Plastics in Willowbrook, IL.
Mr. Stevens was an active member of St. Mary’s Church where he had served as an extraordinary minister, lector and on the finance council. He was a former member of the Bronson Planning Commission and currently a member of the Bronson American Legion. Bob enjoyed golf, traveling, gardening, listening to classical music and was an avid Notre Dame and Tigers fan.
Bob is survived by his wife Hattie, his children Richard (Bridgitte) Stevens of Champaign, IL, Ronald (Mary) Stevens of Gallatin, TN, Kathy (Russell) Burrows of Castle Rock, CO, Karen Stevens of Bronson, Robert P. (Cindy) Stevens of Centennial, CO, James (Tracy) Stevens of Grand Rapids, his brother Tom Stevens of Clearwater, FL, sister Betty Lou (Steve) Buczkowski of Sterling Heights, 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren.
