Obituary for Douglas L. Smith

Douglas L.  Smith
Douglas ‘Lee’ Smith, 79, of Coldwater, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Laurels of Coldwater.
Doug was born May 31, 1935 in Angola, IN., to Iva and Claude Smith. He graduated from METZ High School where he played baseball, then entered the United States Coast Guard. During this period of time he traveled extensively and lived across the U.S.A., including Hawaii and Guam. He started working for the United States Postal Service while living in Florida, transferring to Coldwater in 1967 to be close to family and retired in 1996. He married Pauline Andrews on December 24, 1956, she preceded him in death on June 15, 1987.
Doug then met and married Della Warner, who survives. He enjoyed his retirement years traveling across country in his motor home visiting friends and taking time to enjoy birding. He was a member of the Elks, served on the Coldwater City Council, and member of the Michigan Audubon Society.
In addition to his wife, Douglas is survived by his sister, Carolyn Conary of Maine, daughters, Jackie (Gary) Werkman of Coldwater, Cathy Smith of Quincy, sons, Michael (Lisa) Smith of Coldwater and Randy (Leslie) Smith of Fairplay, MO, step-daughters, Carol (Dave) McMillan and Jill Warner, both of Coldwater. He has 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Per Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Memorial donations may be directed to the Naomi Davis Shelterhouse. Arrangements were cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. www.dutcherfh.com
