Obituary for Olan Martin

Olan  Martin
Olan Clark Martin, 91 of Bronson passed away on Tuesday, September 09, 2014 at the Hospice of Dayton in Ohio.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Bronson with Pastor John Fields officiating. Interment will follow at Bronson Cemetery. Visitation is Friday, September 12, 2014 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson and from 10:00 – 11:00 prior to the service at the church.

Olan was born May 21, 1923 to Glenn A. and Theresa “Hope” (Taylor) Martin in Bronson. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1940. On April 4, 1942 he married Doris E. Hillyer in Traverse City.

Mr. Martin worked for five years before and after W.W.II as a tool maker. He served 23 months in the U.S. Navy during the war. In 1948, he started work for the U.S. Postal Service. Olan worked nine years as a clerk and thirty-three years as a rural mail carrier, retiring on January 1, 1990.

Olan was always interested in young people, working in the Boy Scout programs, little league, Babe Ruth baseball, youth bowling programs and was a substitute school bus driver for Bronson Community Schools for 18 years. He was the Assistant Manager of Bronson Recreation Bowling Lanes and the Men’s Bowling Association Secretary for many years.

Mr. Martin served as Bronson Rotary Club Secretary & Treasurer for 16 years and Rotary Club President in 1971. He helped organize the Bronson Jaycees and served as charter President in 1952-53. Olan was very active in church, where he served on many committees & boards. He has a strong love for his family and church. The greatest love in his life was his relationship with his Savior-Jesus Christ.

Olan is survived by his wife of 72 years, Doris Martin of Bronson; his son Kirk (Vicki) Martin of Springfield, OH; his sister Judy Whorley of Kokomo, IN; his son-in-law Lloyd (Terry) Lane of Indianapolis, IN; five grand-children and 14 great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Susan D. Lane; and his brother Gordon Martin.
