Obituary for Donald Ray "Don" Shettler

Donald Ray "Don" Shettler
Donald “Don” Ray Shettler, 84 of Coldwater passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. No formal funeral services are planned. Don will be interred at a later date in Wellman, Iowa.

Donald was born August 12, 1930 to Earl “Dick” and Mary (Slaubaugh) Shettler in Wellman, Iowa. Upon graduation from high school, Don enlisted in the U.S Air Force where he proudly served during the Korean War. Don married the love of his life Rose Allen on June 17, 1951 in Nashua, Iowa. He served a tour of duty in Germany and then returned to the States to finish his enlistment in California. After his discharge from the Air Force the family moved to Coldwater where Don began a long career in construction. Don owned and operated Shettler Construction for 25 years, retiring in 1981.

Don was a family first and caring husband, father, and grand-father. He enjoyed the outdoors while playing golf, fishing, and snowmobiling. As he aged, Don’s love of nature grew and he especially liked bird-watching. He had an enjoyable sense of humor and will be missed by many.

Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years Rose Shettler of Coldwater; his daughters Becky (Dale) Vettel of Homer, Holly (Keith Avra) Warner of Quincy, Patty (Kevin) Lill of Denton, TX; his son Phil (Alicia) Shettler of St. Petersburg, FL; his brothers Cecil Shettler of Wellman, IA, Fred (Mary) Shettler of Columbus Junction, IA, Gary Shettler of Coralville, IA, Kerm (Sharon) Shettler of Sigourney, IA; sisters Mary Lois Shettler of Iowa City, IA, Rachel (Craig) Koehler of Washington, IA; sister-in-law Sandra Shettler of South English, IA; six grand-children and nine great grand-children; several nieces and nephews; and his favorite grand-puppy “Marco”. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Ruth Ann Shettler; his brother Carl Shettler; his sister-in-law Elda Shettler.

Memorials may be directed to the Coldwater Elks Lodge #1054. www.dutcherfh.com
