David Norman Atkins, 63 of Coldwater passed away on Friday, June 27, 2014 at his home.

A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor David Anderson officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service on Tuesday starting at 4:00 PM. Interment will take place at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery.

David was born January 3, 1951 to William H. and Helen “Beryl” (Benedict) Atkins in Coldwater. Upon graduation from Coldwater High School, David entered the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his county during Vietnam from 1969 to 1972. Upon return to Coldwater he worked for the Quincy Police & Fire Departments until 1978. David was accepted into the Michigan State Police Academy in 1978. He graduated and then began a 28 year career with the MSP. Upon retirement as a Trooper in 2006 from MSP he worked for a short period with the Branch County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy. In 1982, David received a Life Saving Award for saving the life of a choking two-year old.

David was a loving family man who enjoyed being part of the community. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post #52, as well as serving on the Drill Team for many years. David will be remembered as a friendly, outgoing man who enjoyed being a prankster. He had many hobbies including deer hunting, fishing, and traveling, especially to Lake Superior at Grand Marais with his family. He had a soft spot for animals, but truly loved spending time with his grand-children.

Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife of 11 years, Connie Atkins of Coldwater, his daughter Kristine Lyles of Coldwater; his step-children Joshua Sturgeon of Union City, Michael Sturgeon of Coldwater, and Jamie Sturgeon of Lansing; his sisters Dianne Atkins of Manchester and Debbie (Donald) Rogers of Coldwater; grand-children Syler Lyles of Coldwater, Skyler Burlew of Maysville, KY, Gracie May and Joey Sturgeon of Union City; nephews Nick (Jamie) Rogers, Tony (Blair) Rogers, and Michael David Rogers.
